MGAP August Board Meeting Notes

Minutes

-Paul still working on getting all of the minutes form meetings posted on the web site.

Financial Report

-$2613.09 in the checking account. Paul will mail Lorna the receipt for the blog subscription.

Nicole Nelson, Minneapolis 2^nd Precinct Crime Prevention Specialist

-We talked quite a bit about the results from “Calls For Service” Report dating back to 1999. Very few Noise, Party, Music calls. Many calls for parking issues, unwanted person, and false security alarms to the sororities.

-After a 3^rd false alarm property owners will be fined.

-We need to remind our community that we live in an urban, metropolitan area and that crime does happen.

-Better communication could be had with the fraternities.

-Safe & Sober patrols will be held through out the weekends of September.

-The idea of “ride a longs” with MPD was discussed and we will contact Nicole to discuss further.

IFC/PHC

-2^nd Annual U Light Up The Night, Thursday Sept 1 from 6-9 pm

MGAP Membership

-We will be contacting those that have shown interest before and recruit others to run for Board seats.

-An email will go out to all house corporations who are not members with MGAP information and a request to attend one of their upcoming meetings.

2nd Annual Block Party

September 1 from 6 pm – 9 pm is the 2^nd Annual U Light Up the Night block party held in the Marcy-Holmes Neighborhood. This year two blocks, 11^th to 13^th Aves, on 5^th Street will be blocked off from traffic.

This event has two purposes; the first is to be a welcome back to students in the neighborhood and to increase interaction between the students and other residents of the neighborhood.

The second purpose is to support the effort of increasing overhead lighting in the area. Currently a proposal is before the City Council for lighting on 15^th Ave from 5^th Street to Como Ave.

The Panhellenic Council has been leading this effort for almost two years.

The next step in the process is an August 23^rd public hearing of the Transportation and Public Works Committee. The meeting starts at 9:30 am and this item is #2 on the agenda. The meeting is held in the Council Chamber, Room 317 Minneapolis City Hall.

Crime Stats

Over the past few years we have seen that during certain times of the year crime in the University area happens more often than other times. MGAP contacted Nicole Nelson, 2^nd Precinct Crime Prevention Specialist, to see if we could get some perspective on this topic.

We gave addresses of the IFC/PHC groups in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood and requested statistics back to 2000.

Nicole was able to go back to 1999 and we have a hard copy and an Excel spreadsheet for each location. The report for each property shows all “Calls For Service” which shows the date, time, nature of the call, source of the call being 911 or non-emergency, and what happened once a unit was dispatched. We do have an ID # for each call but not the specific report for each one.

While we are still analyzing the data it appears that very few of the calls were for noise, music, or party.

Nicole is attending the MGAP Board meeting on Aug 18 and we will be asking her questions regarding the reports, how MGAP can get involved, and to further open the lines of communication between the Greek community and 2^nd Precinct of the Minneapolis Police Department.

We appreciate the help and information Nicole has given us and we will in the next couple of weeks request the same information for the groups on University Ave.

Ryan Bade Update and Article

Amelious Whyte, FIJI Academic Advisor, recently spent a few days in Sioux Falls, SD with Ryan and his family. He is showing many of signs of being close to coming out of his coma. Ryan will be temporarily be moving to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. This is a fantastic facility and specializes in rehabilitation of patients with brain injuries.

Ryan’s CaringBridge site has been visited more than 17,700 times and is updated frequently by Ryan’s family.

PHC Recruitment Release Figure Meeting

Carol Warren, NPC RFM Specialist and MGAP VP Collegiate Relations, hosted a meeting on August 9^th for NPC groups on the new process for submitting invitation lists during formal recruitment.
